This weekend the temperature was 65 and sunny, making it perfect conditions for outdoor projects. Yesterday Gerry went up on the roof of the house to put roofing tar on several loose shingles. He even tied a rope around his waist to catch him in case he slipped. Today he put a vent in the roof of my garden shed. We also worked on the compost pile. We shredded the large pieces and I shoveled all of the pile that I had previously made into the box he made a couple weeks ago. By next Spring I should have lots of "black gold" to put on my garden and flowers.

You should try making leaf mould as well as compost. It's so easy - a lot less labour intensive than compost and it's brilliant for conditioning soil texture.
1. Rake up a bin bag full of deciduous leaves.
2. Check that the leaves are not bone dry - if so water them lightly in the bag.
3. Tie up the bag and throw it in an out of the way corner - mine end up behind the garage - and forget it for about six months.
4. Six months later - open up the bag. You should find brown crumbly leaf mould complete with worms - how do they get in there?
5. The brown crumbly leaf mould can be spread on the soil as a mulch and the worms will dig it in for you.
